No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A political controversy has erupted in West Bengal’s Chinsurah after serious allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation were levelled against BJP’s Hooghly organisational district president, Gautam Chattopadhyay. A written complaint has been filed at the Chinsurah police station by Shibshankar Karmakar, a party worker and employee at Chattopadhyay’s business establishment.
In his complaint, Karmakar alleged that the BJP leader made inappropriate advances toward his wife and, after she refused, falsely implicated him in a ₹20 lakh embezzlement case. He further claimed that he was coerced into signing a non-judicial stamp paper acknowledging repayment under pressure. The allegations were also shared publicly by Karmakar through a social media livestream, intensifying the controversy.
The issue gained further traction after political reactions emerged, including sharp criticism from the Trinamool Congress, which accused the BJP of shielding misconduct. The matter has triggered widespread debate during the ongoing election season, with concerns raised over the seriousness of the allegations and their potential political implications.
However, Gautam Chattopadhyay has categorically denied all accusations, calling them false and politically motivated. He maintained that Karmakar had already admitted to financial irregularities and signed a written undertaking to repay the amount. According to him, the allegations are an attempt to evade repayment and defame him ahead of elections. The case has now added to rising political tensions, with calls for a thorough investigation to establish the facts.
